Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 � July 6, 1971), was one of the great early proponents of Jazz music. Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana he was popularly known as Satchmo or Pops and was a fantastic cornet player. He also played the trumpet and he was responsible in promoting solo performance in Jazz music. He also took to singing and his voice was very expressive and his penchant for improvisation had many admirers. Another fantastic ability that he had, was to sing using syllables rather than actual words and this was popularly known as �scat singing�.

His career took off in the late 1920�s and after four decades he was as good a singer as a trumpet player and was thought to have changed the ground rules of popular music in general with his deep voice. His ardent followers included critics like Steve Legett who considers him to be one of the all time greats of American music
