Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897. She has been missing since July 2, 1937. She was one of the first women from the States to take to the skies. In addition, she was a celebrated writer. Her ability as a pilot won accolades and she created history by being the first woman recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. This was following her feat of flying alone over the Atlantic Ocean. Her passion of flying made the subject of many of the books that she penned and all these books were hugely successful ad hit the bestsellers lists. She was also the inspiration behind “The Ninety Nines” an association of pilots belonging to the fairer sex. Her passion drove her to be a part of the Purdue University Aviation department since 1935 and her role was to enable women make informed choices on their careers as well as motivate others like her who had a passion for the high skies. Her other avenues of interest were the National Woman’s Party as well as the Equal Rights Amendment.

Never to lead a dull life in 1937 she tried to fly around the globe in a Lockheed L-10 Electra aircraft as a part of a project funded by Purdue but her aircraft disappeared around Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. Her life and her disappearance still continue to inspire and draw awe among many a woman of these times.
