"Bette" Davis was born as Ruth Elizabeth Davis on April 5, 1908 and passed away on October 6, 1989. Bette Davis as she is popularly known was one of the most charismatic actresses to occupy the silver screen in yesteryears. Her greatness lay in the fact that she could slip in and out of a wide range of characters, be it a damsel in distress or an unforgiving dark villain. Further she has proved herself in all kinds of movies like movies depicting legends and characters of the past, to comedies and even crime thrillers. Bur her forte was always in love stories.

She started her career in Broadway and then graduated to the film world. Her initial movies with Universal Studios flopped. She was appreciated for her roles in the movies that was released when she was associated with Warner Bros in 1932. But her career reached its height in 1937 when she tried to break her terms with Warner Bros and she eventually lost the legal suit that she filed against the studio. Her intense persona n stage was a big hit and that made her one of the most popular leading ladies. But she was a difficult person to work with and her professional relationships with costars, film directors and studio personnel were very unsavory. To remember Bette Davis on screen was to imagine a woman with a forthright manner with a cigarette in her lips and who uses her words sparsely.

Davis jointly found the Hollywood Canteen, and was the first woman president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She won the Oscar Award for Best Actress two times. She was the first person to collect ten Oscar nominations for acting. She has also won the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award and is the first woman to get that honor. However her career has had many ups and downs and she herself has said that her success came at the cost of her personal life. She was married four times, of which once she was widowed and three times she was divorced. She raised her kids as a single parent. She suffered a long bout of illness, but she acted almost till her death. She died of breast cancer. She has acted in more than 100 films and several theater and television roles. She became the second actress on the list of greatest movies actresses of all times prepared by the American Film Institute, which was topped by Katharine Hepburn.
