Famous People From South Dakota

Ernest Orlando Lawrence was born on August 8, 1901 and passed away on August 27, 1958. He was an American physicist and a Nobel Prize winner. He is famous for his work on the cyclotron atom-smasher which he invented in 1929, used and later improved. He has also worked on the Manhattan Project in the area of uranium-isotope separation.

Lawrence was the Professor of Physics at the University of California where he had an illustrious career. In 1939, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention of the cyclotron and its uses. He has a chemical element named in his honor – element 103 is called "lawrencium". He is also the first winner of the Sylvanus Thayer Award. His brother John H. Lawrence was also famous for his path breaking work in the area of nuclear medicine.
